Does anyone know anything about the kite that's on the front of the current "Kite flyer" magazine? All it says in the magazine is that the picture was taken at the Dieppe festival, & it's one of the Swiss teams 'bird' kites. I've done lots of interweb searching for these with no success. Any ideas anyone? Is it a 'production' kite? Is it horrendously expensive? Tara.

I never got as far as opening my Kite Flyer magazine this month. The cat s*at on the mat, and my mail was on the mat, so was the Electric bill, Gas bill, TV licence bill, Water bills, Visa bills, all RED and all DRY.....Guess which one I usually open first? Yea.. that was the only one I usually look forward to opening but wet and undesirable!
Has anyone got a spare copy they can send me, Please, I'd be able to see these Kites then?!

I have a feeling that as with the other kites they flew, they were made by the Drachenclub Scaffhausen members at one of their workshops. I have tried searching the net as well, and the best I can come up with is the Swiss Team's website: www.drachenclubsh.ch which has a couple of contact e-mail addresses on it. However I got a U in 'O' Level German The picture on the kiteflier dosn't really give an impression of the size, but from this photo I reckon about 2-3m wingspan

Yes I now remember those Kites from Portsmouth....did you see the detailing of all their kites? Meticulous, I'm sure some of them were also watchmakers...the brackets and spar joins were all machined aluminium and works of art in themselves, never mind the Kites!
Also found this Team Spirit!

These are fantastic kites I think they call them the umbrella kite because of the way they fold up.
The swiss club (group) has some metal working engineers as members and produce all the fittings themselves. I am sure that they do not sell the kites, as the fittings alone , I was told, took 9 hours each to make so are a labour of love.
I did talk about doing a club workshop not this kite but the kinetic kite with the BKF but at the moment this is very much on a back burner from all parties with other commitments.

Chaps, thanks for the ideas, fortunately I have a smartarse (tm) colleague, who speaks most euro languages fluently, & she is actually German. So I'll ask her to drop them an email & see what happens. How about inviting them to BKF '08? Tara.

Of cause we could all go out to their festival which, if my poor German is correct, is always the second week in August. Also Schaffhausen is actually closer the Inverness, though the route planner our hauler uses does exclude the channel crossing in the mileage since you are not actually driving that bit ;D
How about club twinning? If it works for towns.

Just a brief update, I've contacted the Swiss team responsible for the kite in question (via my German speaking office mate). And it turns out that they were built as a club project, & after construction had taken place, the drawings were burned! The nice Swiss lady doesn't say if this was accidental or deliberate, but she goes on to mention that she may be able to provide some drawings of the kites that the 'Bird' kites were inspired by.
Just need to find someone to build them then ;D

Just need to find someone to build them then ;D If you have the drawings and materials, I have the sewing machine, machine shop and the skills to drive them. Though at the moment I have an eight room dolls house, three bird tables, a tortoise house and a strato-spool to complete before Christmas Day. ;D
