Well what can I say, We only popped up for a couple of hours on Saturday but due to multiple invitations to stay for the BBQ and birthday parties we stayed until about 10pm. Glad we did as we had a wonderful time and really appreciated the hospitality from everyone. As for doing it again soon ! A definite yes We appear to be free on the 20/21st Sept for some reason ;D (Did I tell you Chelmsford was cancelled) and the weekend after Ardingly. regards Dave & Sheila

Don't forget it is Margate 20th and 21st September
it would be a shame to keep clashing with festivals

We have not planned on doing Margate anyway as its quite a treck for us all stuffed in the car thats basically why we didnt do Bristol.
So any alternative thats closer to us would have appeal as Sumners Pond does.
Yes to a degree it is a pity to miss out on these festivals but i must admit i love the atmosphere at these informal get togethers - no pressure - do what you want - laid back
Oh and i suppose there is also the cost of taking kids to festivals (mummy i want this and that) lol
Yes i did miss out on Bristol and the picture taking that i normally do but i took plenty last Saturday thanks to Matt and his new toy :-)

Don't forget it is Margate 20th and 21st September it would be a shame to keep clashing with festivals Absolutely agree with the above statement!
However, it is not a pre arranged 'event' to clash / compete with anything else on the Club Calendar, more an impromptu gathering of kite fliers who would otherwise be twiddling their thumbs at home, or being forced into DIY jobs in the house, put off from previous weekend events all summer long. ;D
Rather than being tortured at home I can confirm that a Sumners Ponds 'Escape' weekend is booked from Friday 19th. September to the Monday 22nd. for anyone who would otherwise be doing no kite flying! How many of us would do the suggested LUTS weekend on the 11/12th. October at Sumners Ponds? If there is enough interest I could book it in as it does not clash with anything as far as I am aware, and could involve everyone........let me know.

You could ask Simon (farmer) if he would waive the fees for Saturday night and they be donated to Children in Need, which is what L.U.T.S raises money for, please correct me if I am wrong. October at Sumners Pond is going to be like June, July and August at Sumners Pond, the weather can't get any worse or can it?

I joined Brighton kite flyers for the whole family to have fun! When i signed the membership form i didn't see any mention of being expected to attend all the festivals that other members attend.
For the last couple of years we have been lucky enough to have the funds to attend most of the festivals as well as the whole families approval. ( It's important to me as a mum that all of us want to go and not to drag the children if they don't want to. ) This year however money is a lot tighter and we cannot afford the petrol for a camper or car ( which was suggested as an option ) to all the festivals. Others may judge us to be not promoting the club by going to Sumners pond BUT WE WOULD BE AT HOME OTHERWISE.
RANT OVER! But boy do i feel better!

My birthday is 15th Sept, so a party at Sumners or Dieppe on 13/14th would have been great. As it is i'm currently going to be sitting at home twiddling my thumbs as i can't afford to do Dieppe & Sumners is on the following week. Heho we will have to celebrate at Margate the following weekend.
any road, you are only as old as the woman you feel. & she is 8 years younger than me. ;D
To me, Cheers, Greenman

Barney - I joined the club several years ago as i found the members very friendly and helpfull although i did let my membership lapse for a year last year (due to funding issues but the same applied to all the clubs i am a member of)..
Anyways i am now back in the fold (or crease or whatever (family)) and from the start i have found the club members the same ( a great friendly bunch )
I have never been pressurised or tortured into going to certain events that the club are invited to to fly.
We are all free spirits and we do what we want when we want, as for Margate or Sumners Pond - this wasnt really a hard choice Sumners Pond is less than half the mileage of Margate so We will be going to Sumners Pond :-)
I love the relaxed atmosphere at these informal events, if you want fly, if you dont - dont Lol :-)
Just turn up - stick up a tent - lose the kids and chill for the weekend
Dave :-)

As you say, Barny the club can not force any member to attend any festivals and nor does it, and there is no obligation to attend in the club rules.
Funds are tight this year for all of us, including the club, so when we are offered some money to put on a display at Margate, in the clubs interest the committee said yes we would get a team together and go. It would therefor be nice to get quite a large team together and put on a good display. So when other events are planned for the same weekend possibly cutting down numbers it was asked for this to be considered before the event was advertised.
Last year the funds raised from these paid display flies paid for the Christmas party and towards BBQ's held at some festivals where the club flew etc so all club members could have benefited last year from these displays and the monies raised.

I do play the fool, and do it really well I think, but I am not really an Idiot. Knowing that the BKF chairman and Kite Society would consider it imposing if club members were offered an option to the ‘Margate International Kite Festival’ venue, I did not put up anything like this in place of the cancelled Chelmsford event, although I was asked to by quite a few people. I can fully see and understand their viewpoint, hence nothing was done about arranging another Sumners Ponds on a clashing date, earlier on in the year. It did however raise its head again at the weekend when a lot of people said to each other “SEE YOU AT KINGSFOLD”….four weeks away as they WERE NOT GOING TO GO TO MARGATE ANYWAY. In all honesty I have just looked at my calendar after the 13th./14th. September was suggested (posted above and only yesterday) and wish I had booked it for then, it would have been bang smack in the middle of the four weeks. I put my hands up to that one, with the benefit of hindsight (and a Calendar in front of me) I could have done better!!Personally, and along with many others I was always going to another Chelmsford event prior to even knowing the date, as it was so different. When it was cancelled, there was Margate to do, I really didn’t fancy Margate for a variety of reasons, which meant I would be staying at home. There are more club members that stay at home than come to any given event….regularly, as they have other hobbies and places to be and things to do too….not every member is present at anything. Abstainers reasons for NOT attending events range from “ We are going to…an Air show, a steam rally, motor sports, bonfires, kids brownies / ballet, etcetera and it hasn’t drawn this much flack!!“Here we go again” comes to mind. And some very unnecessary insinuations are being ambiguously touted on here for no GOOD reason whatsoever. There is no ‘issue’ here unless YOU make it an issue. I put this event on the Forum Calendar the night before last, and by yesterday morning it was removed, why?
I quote from the Forum ‘Rules’: “You acknowledge that whilst messages are posted on this Forum the Forum is not responsible for the content or accuracy of any message posted. Any representations views or opinions presented in any message are solely yours as author and do not represent those of Brighton Kite Flyers or the Brighton Kite Flyers Forum.
The purpose of the Forum is to promote Brighton Kite Flyers, Kite Flying and distribute information use full to club members and other kite flyers and you will restrict your posts to the foregoing and reasonably related areas and will not post any of the following material:”And the Web site: “Brighton Kite Flyers (BKF): brings together kite enthusiasts from all walks of kite flying with the aim of exchanging information, techniques and ideas. Founded in 1979, the club has developed into a flourishing group with members worldwide. The club is known, and respected, for it's friendly and enthusiastic approach to kite flying and it's willingness to work with other kite flyers and public to promote the sport / hobby of kite flying.”Democratically speaking I cannot see why my calendar entry was removed, as it adhered to the spirit of all the above mentioned Club rules, not to everyone’s liking, but then what is? Censorship of postings is a necessity but freedom of speech and discussion is what a forum is about I always thought?May there be wind on your back, a smile of your face, and a kite in the sky. Promoting the Club takes many guises..
